The company has advised households to postpone using heavy appliances like washing machines and dishwashers between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday, when the moon is projected to obscure up to 95% of the sun across parts of the UK.

The celestial event, which has not been seen at this scale since the late 1990s, will cause a sharp drop in solar power generation. Octopus Energy said the timing of the eclipse coincides with the evening peak in energy demand, creating an unusual challenge for grid operators who must balance supply and consumption without relying on fossil fuel backup.

To encourage participation, the supplier is offering customers financial incentives through its flexible energy tariff, which rewards those who shift usage to off-peak hours. This approach, the company noted, not only helps stabilise the grid but also reduces carbon emissions, as solar capacity will be temporarily reduced.

"We're asking our customers to be mindful of their consumption for just a few hours," a spokesperson said. "Small changes, like delaying a load of laundry, can make a significant difference when solar generation is reduced."

Industry experts note that such appeals are becoming more common as renewable energy grows. The National Grid has already indicated it expects to manage the event without emergency measures, but cooperation from consumers, they say, will be essential to avoid higher carbon intensity during the eclipse.
