New research indicates that dogs are not only attentive to their owners' moods but also possess the ability to differentiate between various negative human facial expressions. The study, led by Dr. Laura Cuaya from the University of Vienna, used brain imaging to observe how dogs process visual cues of human emotions.
While earlier behavioral experiments have demonstrated that dogs can recognize certain human facial expressions, these studies typically compared only two emotions at a time—usually one positive and one negative. This limited approach left a gap in understanding whether dogs could discriminate among multiple types of unhappy expressions, such as fear, anger, or sadness.
In the current study, researchers presented dogs with images depicting different facial expressions while monitoring their brain activity via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The findings revealed distinct neural responses in regions associated with emotional processing, suggesting that dogs can indeed distinguish between fearful, angry, and sad human faces.
